The Flex platform provides several options for managing email, messaging and video communication throughout corrections enterprises.

GTL, which develops IT and communications services for corrections facilities, has as introduced its Flex platform, a low-cost inmate communications and services portal.  The platform combines the functionality of in-pod kiosks, video visitation stations and inmate phones into a single, low-cost, flexible device, saving space and making efficiency-boosting technology available to more facilities, the company said in its announcement.

The entire system is available in three tablet housings. One enables corrections facilities to deploy video visitation, inmate calling, email, grievance filing and commissary ordering.  A separate configuration allows inmates to sync their educational materials to mobile devices.   

The tablet computers used in the Flex platform also possess a “corrections-grade secure operating system,” which operates over GTL’s secure network. GTL said the Flex platform runs on power over Ethernet and does not require 120VAC.

GTL also offers a series of personal handheld devices that use a restricted operating system that thwarts unauthorized attempts to modify a device’s internal settings and prohibits users from installing unapproved applications.

“These products have the ability to isolate offenders in their cell and allow corrections officers to focus on more important security issues within the facility,” the company said.

With GTL wireless tablets, for instance, facilities can deploy a full suite of applications on secure “behind-the-bars” handheld devices to help automate and manage offender requests such as commissary ordering, law library access and policy handbook review.
