GAO: FBI case management assets remain missing
Bureau says it has accounted for 800 of 1,200 missing pieces of equipment, but GAO could not verify the claim.
The FBI still has not told the Government Accountability Office what has happened to hundreds of pieces of equipment that were supposed to be part of a failed department-wide case-management system.
"The FBI also has not provided any additional explanation for the remaining roughly 400 missing assets," Linda Calbom, the GAO's director of financial management and assurance wrote in a letter.
The letter, dated Friday, was addressed to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and addressed many of the follow-up questions that the committee had for GAO. The GAO released a report in May detailing the flaws in the FBI's Trilogy system.
It reported that the FBI could not locate more than 1,200 pieces of equipment, valued at about $7.6 million. The FBI responded by saying that it had accounted for 800 of those items, but GAO could not verify that claim, Calbom wrote.
