House chair raps INS technology investments

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee on Monday criticized the Justice Department's management of information technology investments at the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., said the department "must make the effective use of technology and IT systems a priority that it clearly has not been" doing.

Sensenbrenner made the comments upon the release of a General Accounting Office report (GAO-03-135) that concluded that INS technologies have been ineffective.

"With the INS moving to the Department of Homeland Security," Sensenbrenner said, "I hope that the chief information officer of that department takes note of this report and puts oversight in place before ... more public money is mismanaged."
