CIOs shift focus from e-government to security

The federal government's chief information officers are less focused on e-government services because of the national emphasis on information security and the stability of critical infrastructures, according to a new study.

Commissioned by the Information Technology Association of America, the study indicates that CIOs are more focused on database protection and ensuring the stability of the Internet and the telecommunications infrastructure than they are on unveiling e-government services.

But federal CIOs also touted e-government and cited the need for information security to realize the potential of e-government.

The report, "The Federal Information Age: Stakeholders, Customers, Citizens," involved interviews with 29 CIOs and information resource managers late last year.

"We see a strong trend in this year's survey, as federal IT managers say they will seek additional partnering opportunities with the private sector on e-government projects," said Olga Grkavac, executive vice president of Information Technology Association of America's Enterprise Solutions Division.
