Buyout Watch: Air Force and TSA Join the List

An inventory of the agencies that are cutting costs through buyouts or early retirements.

After a brief lull, more federal agencies are starting to offer buyouts or early retirements again as a means of cutting costs. Activity is likely to pick up even more as the temporary reprieve from sequestration draws to a close. We will once again keep a running list of the agencies that plan to offer separation incentives. Please let us know if there are any we missed, using the comments section below.

  • Air Force: Is offering early retirement and buyouts to civilians, with the goal of reducing its workforce by nearly 3,500 employees.
  • Broadcasting Board of Governors: Has offered two rounds of buyouts already this year.
  • Environmental Protection Agency: Offered buyout and early retirement packages in February.
  • Government Printing Office: Seeking authority to offer early outs and buyouts Oct. 1 – Dec. 31, with the goal of convincing about 100 employees to leave.
  • Transportation Security Administration: Is offering early outs to workers who meet age and service criteria. Employees must leave by Dec. 31, 2014. Certain employees, including air marshals, are not eligible.
  • U.S. Postal Service:  3,000 postmasters have the option to retire early, for $10,000 each. Deadline for accepting offers is Aug. 18.
