Play of the Day: Hat-Based Diplomacy

Donald Trump and Shinzō Abe played golf, talked about samurai and signed hats.

A woman was fired from her job recently for giving President Donald Trump's motorcade the middle finger. Conan O'Brien joked about the news, tying it to First Lady Melania Trump.

Trump touched down in Japan over the weekend and spent time with Prime Minister Shinzō Abe. The Japanese leader made Trump comfortable by playing golf with him and autographing custom baseball hats that said “Donald & Shinzo, Make Alliance Even Greater.” The Daily Show's Trevor Noah said the hats look like "a novelty souvenir from a bachelorette party," while Late Night's Seth Meyers joked that the language sounds like "what you'd say to a monkey while teaching it sign language." Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked that "all the best diplomacy was accomplished via headgear" and showed a Photoshopped image of the Yalta Conference.

The start of the trip was not without a Trump gaffe, though, as the president curiously wondered aloud why "a country of samurai warriors" didn't prevent North Korean missiles. Meyers joked that Trump could've given Abe a drawing, while Colbert joked that Trump maybe had other ideas like "a ninja, could be a Power Ranger or Godzilla."
