Play of the Day: Trump Starts a Feud With the NFL

In Alabama, the president criticized players protesting on the field.

During an Alabama rally for Luther Strange on Friday night, President Donald Trump lamented safety-focused rules changes in the NFL. Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked about Trump was complaining about safety measures to prevent brain damage, while The Daily Show's Trevor Noah wondered how an avid golfer could complain that another sport is "soft."

At the same rally, Trump criticized NFL players who kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality by saying he would “love to see” an NFL owner fire a player who protested. Noah noted that Trump seemed to remember that "you're fired!" is his catchphrase midway through the move, while Late Night's Seth Meyers wondered about Trump's hand motion indicating he was turning off a TV. Other late-night hosts noted that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin saying players could "do free speech on their own time," with Colbert joking about the Constitution's fine print.
