Play of the Day: The Stages of the Wall Bargaining

It went from "Mexico will pay" to "a metaphor," so what's next?

White House official Ivanka Trump spoke at a German conference this week and was booed when she suggested her father President Donald Trump is "a tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive." Conan O'Brien said Tuesday night that Ivanka just got bad advice ("Always open with a joke") while Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked that Trump obviously supports family leave. That's why he's always leaving one and starting another."

Trump and the Congress are going back and forth on how the border wall will be funded and constructed. Some Republicans in Congress are saying the wall will be a "metaphor," prompting O'Brien to not the chants at the Trump rallies during the 2016 campaign and Late Night's Seth Meyers joking that Trump will eventually be bargained down to a classic sitcom trope. The Daily Show's Trevor Noah referenced a story suggesting the border wall won't be built, but could include the existing fence and surveillance including blimps. Noah joked that the wall will go down in severity and "it's just going to be a ditch and then it's going to just be stern words."
