Senate leader attempts to break stalemate on GSA nominee

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Thursday filed cloture on the nomination of Martha Johnson to head the General Services Administration, in hopes of getting action on the highest-ranking and one of the longest-stalled nominees on the Senate calendar.
The move sets up likely confirmation of Johnson next week. Johnson has been in limbo since July due to a hold by Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., over a dispute with GSA over plans for a federal building in Kansas City, Mo.
Reid also filed cloture on the nomination of M. Patricia Smith, the nominee for Labor Department solicitor. Smith has also been blocked by a hold.
