Senate confirms key regulatory nominee

Despite opposition from some consumer groups and many conservatives, the Senate on Thursday confirmed Cass Sunstein as head of OMB's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

The 57-40 vote gives Sunstein a key role in the Obama administration's formulation of regulatory policy. Consumer advocacy groups have questioned his focus on cost-benefit analysis of regulations, but opposition in recent months came mostly from Republicans and agricultural groups who faulted academic writings in which Sunstein suggested limitations on hunting and urged greater rights for animals.

Citing those issues, Sens. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, placed holds on Sunstein's nomination before lifting them after meeting with him. Democrats said GOP holds remained, requiring a cloture vote Wednesday.
