Program Cuts, Agency-by-Agency

A list of federal programs that will lose some or all of their funding in fiscal 2010 if President Obama gets his way.

President Obama is asking all federal managers to be thriftier these days. But in his formal fiscal 2010 budget request, he was more specific about where he sees potential to save money. A budget document released last week lists 121 program cuts and projects to improve efficiency that collectively would save the government $17 billion in 2010 alone.

We've broken down that list by agency so you can see how these proposals could affect your job. Next to each program, we've noted the amount in millions of dollars that would be saved in fiscal 2010 (over the fiscal 2009 enacted level of funding, or current law for changes to entitlement programs) if Congress approves Obama's request. In some cases, the projected savings are zero, even though the president has proposed eliminating the program. This is because the budget factors in the cost of shutting down the program and finishing projects already in the pipeline; the savings would come in future years.

For a more detailed look at potential savings and the rationale for including programs or efficiency initiatives on the list, read the "Terminations, Reductions and Savings" volume of the fiscal 2010 budget. *These programs contain estimated savings for 2010 and beyond. We listed figures only next to those programs in the budget proposal that are targeted specifically for elimination or reduction. (in millions of dollars)
