Government: CIA destroyed 92 interrogation tapes

ACLU is suing government for details on interrogation tactics used on suspected terrorists.

A government lawyer on Monday said the CIA destroyed videotapes of 92 interrogations of suspected terrorists, far more than the agency initially acknowledged.

The disclosure from a federal prosecutor came in federal court in New York, where the American Civil Liberties Union is suing for details of the government's interrogation tactics after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Federal prosecutors are seeking a delay in the case while it wraps up a criminal investigation of the agency's handling of interrogations while President George W. Bush was in office.

ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said in a statement the CIA should be held in contempt of court for holding back the information for so long.

"The large number of videotapes destroyed confirms that the agency engaged in a systematic attempt to hide evidence of its illegal interrogations and to evade the court's order," Singh said.
