House to vote next week on omnibus spending bill

Federal government programs currently are being funded through a continuing resolution Congress approved in September.

The House next week will take up an omnibus package that consists of the nine remaining fiscal 2009 appropriations bills that Congress has yet to enact, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Tuesday.

"The omnibus, essentially," is what is on tap for next week, Hoyer said at a briefing.

Federal government programs are being funded through a continuing resolution Congress approved in September, and the CR expires March 6. Democratic leaders opted to fund the government through a CR after former President George W. Bush said that he would veto any appropriations bills topping the levels recommended in his 2009 budget.

The CR, which included three 2009 spending bills -- Defense, Military Construction-VA and Homeland Security -- funds most programs at 2008 levels.
