GSA Officially Solicits Sites for New FBI Headquarters

The General Services Administration on Friday took the next step in the years-long process of moving the FBI out of its cramped and outdated J. Edgar Hoover Building headquarters.

A notice on FedBizOpps.gov asks for site proposals from developers willing to donate or sell land in the District or Virginia or Maryland suburbs in exchange for the right to most likely demolish the four-decade-old Hoover building and develop a prestigiously located lot on Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest. Last March, the agency received 38 responses to a call for proposals.

“GSA seeks to identify sites that would be acceptable to include in a future competitive procurement that will provide the best deal for taxpayers,” the agency said in a release.

The current FBI main building is too small to house many of the agency’s nearly 36,000 employees and is considered difficult to maintain and upgrade for the digital age.

GSA will also consider sites already in the government inventory. Bidders have until Dec. 17 to reply to Friday’s ad for expressions of interest. The final procurement will not take place until 2015.
