The Washington Navy Yard will remain closed at most of its employees Tuesday, as federal and local law enforcement officials continue to investigate a shooting at the Naval Sea Systems Command that claimed the lives of 13 people, including the shooter, identified as Aaron Alexis of Texas.
Naval District Washington posted the following notice to its Facebook page Monday evening:
WNY will be closed Tuesday, Sept 17 with the exception of Emergency response and mission essential personnel determined by individual unit commanders.
No vehicle traffic is allowed on or off the base until further notice. When vehicle traffic resumes on base additional notification will be released.
Other federal offices in the vicinity of the Navy Yard were on lockdown throughout much of Monday, but gradually lifted restrictions throughout the day. As of Monday evening, police were still encouraging residents in the vicinity of the Navy Yard to shelter in place, because they had not ruled out the possibility that another shooter was involved and might still be at large.
