Management, benefits bills on the agenda

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee will mark up a slate of bills Wednesday, including the postal overhaul legislation introduced last month by Governmental Affairs Committee Chairwoman Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del.

An aide close to the bill said he expects no major changes to the legislation in the markup.

In Wednesday's meeting, the committee will also mark up a bill to allow federal employees to modify contributions to the Thrift Savings Fund at any time during the year, legislation that would increase federal whistleblower protections, and a bill that would require competition in certain executive agency procurements.

The committee also will take up an amendment to Collins' homeland security grant bill, and the panel will vote on the confirmation of David Safavian as Federal Procurement Policy administrator for the Office of Management and Budget.

The House Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing on the government's role in combating the rise in obesity among Americans. Prior to the hearing, the committee will mark up the Program Assessment and Results Act, which would require a regular results-based review of federal programs.
