Senate leader mulls Sept. 11 probe despite warning from Cheney

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Tuesday that he might want to hold investigations into the events that lead to the Sept. 11 attacks--despite claims by Vice President Dick Cheney that such investigations could detract from the war effort.

Daschle told reporters that, for now, the Senate Select Intelligence Committee was proceeding with its own investigation.

"We may want to build on that," Daschle said. "We may find that that's sufficient. But we're keeping our options open."

Daschle said he has spoken with Cheney, adding that Cheney had expressed the view that a review of the events would take resources and personnel away from the war effort. Daschle apparently remains unconvinced.
