Senators strike deal on border control bill

Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee Chairman Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., announced Friday he had struck a deal with key Republican and Democratic senators on border control legislation designed to deter terrorists.

Kennedy introduced the bill along with Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee ranking member Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and John Kyl, R-Ariz.

"Sen. Brownback and I have worked with Sens. Feinstein and Kyl over the last month to develop a broad and effective response to the national security challenges we face," Kennedy said.

Sources said the bipartisan bill has a good shot at passage before Congress adjourns for the year, but noted that finding Senate floor time or an appropriate vehicle to tag it onto might prove difficult.
