Social Security announces Web-based benefits application process

The Social Security Administration Thursday announced a new Web-based application process for those seeking retirement benefits.

"Giving our customers more opportunities to conduct business over the Internet will reduce costs and make our services more accessible to the public, 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Deputy Commissioner William Halter. "Privacy is a high priority and we only make new online services available when we are confident that the public's privacy is protected."

Applications may be filled out online, but the agency still needs other forms of identification presented in person to establish eligibility.

The electronic application will be stored on a database and automatically retrieved when the agency receives the signed application.

SSA processes about 1.9 million retirement claims annually.
