Lazio could get top HUD post if Bush wins

Sources said Republican presidential nominee Gov. George W. Bush is eyeing Rep. Rick Lazio, R-N.Y., for the job of HUD secretary--providing that Bush wins the presidency.

Although not confirmed by either office, sources said Bush floated the possibility last week after Lazio lost his Senate bid to First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Lazio, who currently serves as chairman of the House Banking Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee, is enthused at the idea of being HUD secretary, according to sources.

A Lazio spokeswoman was unable to provide comment Monday afternoon. Asked for comment, a Bush spokesman insisted the campaign has "not speculated on, or indicated cabinet appointments at this time."
