The Senate late Thursday confirmed former Rep. Norman Mineta, D-Calif., as the Clinton administration's new Commerce secretary.
Mineta replaces William Daley, who recently left the post to run Vice President Al Gore's presidential campaign.
Mineta, who will be the first Asian-American Cabinet member, was confirmed on a voice vote to the post, where he is only assured of serving the six remaining months in President Clinton's term.
