Senator seeks to overhaul HUD programs

Senate Banking Housing and Transportation Subcommittee Chairman Wayne Allard, R-Colo., released draft legislation Tuesday that would revamp a significant number of the 328 programs administered by HUD.

"It is clear that many of HUD's current programs can be better run at the state and local level," Allard said.

The bill would terminate 23 HUD programs and combine HUD's six homeless assistance programs into a single formula block grant distributed to cities and states.

Provisions also would expand the "Moving to Work" program to all public housing authorities and seek to improve voucher programs at HUD.

"My desire is to develop a bill that gives communities an opportunity to solve their local housing problems," Allard said.

He said he will seek public comment on his proposal until early July and hopes to have a final version of the bill ready for introduction before the end of July.
