New per diem rates to take effect in October

The 2001 federal per diem rates will take effect in October this year, rather than in January 2001, the General Services Administration has announced.

GSA has traditionally revised and updated per diem rates every January. This year, GSA is moving per diem changes to coincide with the start of fiscal 2001 on October 1. In future years, the annual per diem revisions will also coincide with the start of the fiscal year.

The 2001 rates will be published on Sept. 1, GSA said.

In addition, GSA announced on Friday that the lodging rate for federal travelers staying in Aspen, Colo., will be $140 from June 1 until the end of this fiscal year. The lodging rate from Jan. 1 to March 31 was $163. From April 1 to May 31, the rate is $68. GSA said the revision corrects an error in the original publication of the 2000 per diem rates last December.

GSA sets seasonal rates for numerous locations, based on surveys of lodging prices throughout the year.
