The General Services Administration is busy staffing up operations at the Federal Technology Service (FTS). Wendell Berry has been named program director in the FTS IT Solutions Regional Services Center. Berry brings 25 years of federal management experience to his new position, including work overseeing all phases of software development.
Meanwhile, Gale Greenwald has been named a procurement program analyst at FTS. Greenwald has experience in IT contracting from her previous work at the National Institutes of Health and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Other FTS additions include Denny Groh, who will serve as deputy assistant commissioner, heading the Office of Service Delivery, and Patrick Smith, the new director of the Financial Management Systems Software Center. Groh, who joins GSA from the private sector, will lead a program to provide voice, data, video and wireless service to federal agencies. Smith will manage support services for agencies' acquisition and installation of new financial systems. Smith formerly served as a manager at the Commerce Department.
The Department of Energy continues to reshuffle its personnel. Gary K. King will become the director of the Office of Worker and Community Transition. King has been serving as policy advisor to DOE's assistant secretary for environmental management.
King replaces Robert DeGrasse, who has been named the principal deputy for operations for DOE's defense programs organization. In his new role, DeGrasse will provide day-to-day operational oversight of the nation's nuclear weapons research, development and production facilities.
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Inc. has honored Rear Adm. Evelyn J. Fields, NOAA Corps, with the Ralph M. Metcalfe Health, Education and Science Award. Fields was recently appointed director of the NOAA Commissioned Corps. She is the first woman, and the first African American, to hold this position.
Congratulations to the Defense Logistics Agency, selected as the EEO/HR Best Practices Award winner at the Fourth Annual EEO/HR Forum, sponsored by FPMI Communications and IHS Human Resource Products. The agency has joined its EEO and HR offices under the umbrella set of policies and services that helps the program's customers.
Kudos to Sandra J. Gorba of the Army Logistics Support Activity's Packaging, Storage and Containerization Center. Gorba is credited with securing a Department of Transportation exemption renewal that allowed the uninterrupted transport of munitions containing depleted uranium. She saved the government approximately $20 million that would have been needed to repackage the shipments had the exemption not been obtained.
