Civil service panel chief out for the year

Rep. Joe Scarborough, R-Fla., chairman of the House panel that oversees civil service issues, will miss the rest of this year's session in order to recover from a back injury he received after falling out of a tree while playing with his sons, the Associated Press reported.

According to a statement released by his office, the chairman of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee Civil Service Subcommittee ruptured two discs in his back and is consulting with physicians on possible corrective surgery.

Scarborough is expected to recover before the second session of the 106th Congress gets under way in January.

In the meantime, House Speaker Denny Hastert, R-Ill., has granted Scarborough a medical leave of absence.
