Contractor gives military Y2K fix for free

A retired Air Force major working as a military contractor has developed his own Y2K computer fix and has given the free program to the U.S. military and anyone else who wants it, reports Joe Danborn in the Mobile (AL) Register.

Lester Holmes created "Holmes Fx" in his spare time in 1996 and the program has been sent to every Air Force base and Air National Guard station in the world. It has also been passed to other military bases.

"He did it at home just to see if he could do it," said 1st Lt. Greg Banfield, Y2K project officer for Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. "We have no real way of telling how many bases or how many machines are actually using it, but we know they all have it."
