Hard on the heels of bomb-resistant wallpaper comes intelligent wallpaper, which will be sold in 4-foot-wide rolls and behave like a computer display screen.

Xerox Corp. announced this week that 3M Corp. will be licensed to manufacture the product, developed at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.

John Seely Brown, the center director, said the wallpaper will offer high display resolution for good readability. As a new kind of product, it falls somewhere between paper and a computer screen, company officials said.

The companies aren't saying when the intelligent wallpaper will be available to buyers. It can be used in several ways, such as presenting newspapers and magazines that can be updated continuously and creating white board-style wall displays and billboards.
