Report: Interior computer system mismanaged

A General Accounting Office report alleges that the Interior Department is spending $60 million on a computer system to manage American Indian trust funds without knowing if the system will do the job, the Associated Press has reported.

GAO warned that other agencies, such as the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, made the same mistake in the past-spending millions on new systems without testing to see if they could handle the task.

"We need to get this fixed now rather than spending another two to three years studying it," said Rex Hackler, a spokesman for Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs. "The BIA is going to incredible lengths to make sure this system is working by the deadlines that have been set."
