House, Senate will take up budget next week

When Congress returns from recess next week, both the House and the Senate intend to vote on the fiscal 2000 budget resolution conference report before the statutory deadline of April 15.

The House will take up suspensions Monday, and begin voting after 5 p.m. Tuesday; in addition to the budget, the House will consider a constitutional amendment to require a two-thirds majority vote to raise taxes, and legislation to allow for local governments to conduct post-census reviews of census data.

The Senate returns at noon Monday, and could vote on the education flexibility conference report.

The next congressional recess will be for Memorial Day. But while the Senate will take off from May 28 to June 7, the House will recess only from May 28 to June 1.
