House to turn to appropriations bills

House Republicans are planning to focus on appropriations when they return from their spring recess in mid-April.

A spokeswoman for Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, today said at least "a couple" of spending bills will be on the floor before the Memorial Day recess.

Likely candidates would be bills that are either small or relatively noncontroversial, such as the Military Construction, Defense, Energy and Water, and the District of Columbia appropriations bills, she said.

House Appropriations Chairman Bill Young, R-Fla., said Republicans might move as many as four spending bills before the end of May, if not sooner.

"We will be surprising everyone with how quickly we move appropriations bills," he said.

Republicans are hoping to pass all 13 spending measures before the August recess.
