FCC could be in for restructuring

The Federal Communications Commission should be braced for scrutiny and various proposals to overhaul its structure when the 106th Congress convenes next year, according to House Commerce Telecommunications, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman W. J. (Billy) Tauzin, R-La.

In an interview with National Journal earlier this week, Tauzin said his top priority will be "a major effort in the first six months to put together a major restructuring, reform of the FCC that I intend to have ready by June."

Tauzin also noted he had spoken recently with FCC Chairman William Kennard about his plan, and that the top FCC official agreed the agency structurally "is out of date and that he's got some ideas he wants to share with me."

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., has indicated he plans a similar effort right out of the gate next year.
