DOE to probe health risks at nuke sites

Energy Secretary Bill Richardson last week said he would "investigate reports of health problems among people living near or working at federal nuclear weapons plants and research facilities in 11 states."

Last week, the Nashville Tennessean reported on its 22-month investigation of "unexplained illnesses" among 410 people in connection with 13 DOE sites in 11 states.

Richardson, speaking in Denver after a meeting Friday with residents near the Rocky Flats nuclear site: "My view is we ought to get to the bottom of this. I want to be absolutely sure we're erring on the side of making sure there are no problems" (AP/San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner, 10/3).
