House GOPer urges more defense funding

House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Rep. C.W. (Bill) Young, R-Fla., Monday released a letter to President Clinton that urges the administration to find more funding for defense programs.

In the letter, Young said he recently met with military leaders and "what I have seen and learned is alarming and rapidly approaching crisis proportions."

It is more difficult to recruit and maintain quality personnel and "dangerous undermanning" has become a serious problem, Young said. In addition, equipment is in poor repair and shortages are developing.

"Please join me and many others here in Congress in our efforts to provide more adequate resources for the defense of our country as we close out this appropriations cycle," Young wrote.
