FAA chief says agency is on track for Y2K

Airplanes will not drop from the sky on Jan. 1, 2000, and the Federal Aviation Administration is proceeding quickly to fix problems associated with the year 2000 computer bug, FAA Administrator Jane Garvey told a joint hearing of three House committees today.

Garvey told members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Government Reform and Science panels that the FAA would complete a renovation of 99 percent of all mission critical systems by Wednesday's deadline, and would soon move into testing and evaluation stages.

However, she cautioned, "I'm not overconfident, and I won't be until Jan. 2, 2000."
