White House spokesman McCurry to resign

President Clinton today announced the resignation of White House Press Secretary Michael McCurry, saying he has selected Deputy Press Secretary Joseph Lockhart as McCurry's replacement.

McCurry plans to stay until the end of the current session of Congress, which is due to adjourn in early October. Clinton lauded McCurry for his work at the White House, saying "McCurry has set a standard by which future press secretaries will be judged."

McCurry--whose experience as a press secretary includes a decade and a half on Capitol Hill and on the presidential campaign trail prior to joining the Clinton administration--declined to discuss his future in detail. But he did indicate he would be making speeches, be involved in the "consulting world," and that he "may teach" as well.
