Senators rip regulatory reform bill

Sens. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Robert Torricelli, D-N.J., Wednesday sought to undermine regulatory reform legislation with horror stories about food poisoning illnesses and deaths.

At a news conference with children stricken by contaminated juice, the senators said the Regulatory Reform Act by Senate Governmental Affairs Chairman Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., could force federal agencies to delay or abandon health ... initiatives.

Durbin said the bill "could delay, block or repeal a wide range of proposals, including new efforts to guarantee the safety of unpasteurized fruit and vegetable juices."

Torricelli said the bill could place "new burdensome rulemaking procedures" on agencies while "exempting corporate reorganizations and mergers."
