Park Service wants higher fees made permanent

The National Park Service wants Congress to make permanent the new or higher fees being charged for previously free recreational activities. The program, authorized by Congress in 1995 and extended last year through September 1999, is expected to raise $140 million for national parks this year, or about 11 percent of the NPS's operating budget. Some parks now collect as much or more from recreation fees as it costs to operate the parks.
