DEFENSE CITES MCKINNEY'S RECORD-"Lawyers for the Army's former top enlisted soldier told a military jury in closing arguments yesterday that Sgt. Maj. Gene C. McKinney's exemplary service record was sufficient alone to raise reasonable doubts about charges that he sexually mistreated six women" (The Washington Post).

EXTENSION GRANTED IN HERMAN PROBE-"Attorney General Janet Reno gained a 60-day extension yesterday for a Justice Department investigation into allegations that Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman accepted illegal funds in an influence-peddling scheme while she served as a Clinton White House aide" (The Washington Post).

CUSTOMS CHIEF-TO-BE WALKS THE FRONT LINE-"As New York City's police commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly would show up unannounced to ride around with patrolmen in their cruisers. When he headed a U.N. police force in Haiti, he sported a .45-caliber Colt automatic on his hip and delved into some of the capital's worst slums. Now a top official in the Treasury Department, he is in line to become a commissioner again, but this time of America's oldest law enforcement agency, and one of its most troubled: the U.S. Customs Service"(The Washington Post).
