Senate Dems Urge IRS Reform

Forty two Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., have signed a letter dated Tuesday to Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., urging him to move IRS reform to the Senate floor this year, rather than waiting until next year as recommended by Finance Chairman William Roth, R-Del.

Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., observed that "more people pay taxes than vote," so the "best way to preserve a government of, by and for the people" is to delay the bill no further.

In addition to the letter, Kerrey said he is working with his GOP colleagues to also put pressure on Lott to move the bill and pledged to try to raise IRS as an amendment to other legislation "every day." But Lott's receptivity to the idea is "not positive," Kerrey conceded.
