Clinton Considering Item Vetoes

President Clinton this week will use his line item veto pen to make moderate corrections in the Interior appropriations bill, but will only lightly touch the Labor-HHS bill if at all, according to various sources.

Though Clinton has yet to receive staff recommendations on which items he should delete from either bill, an administration source said that cuts from the Interior bill "in the tens of millions [of dollars]" are currently being weighed. The administration views the Interior bill as much more pork-laden than the Labor-HHS bill.

Officials have not decided whether anything in the Labor-HHS bill will be vetoed--though at least some rescissions are likely. Clinton must choose which items he will remove from the Labor-HHS bill by Wednesday and from the Interior bill by Thursday.
