President Clinton on Thursday named Janice R. Lachance to be director of the Office of Personnel Management.

Lachance was appointed deputy director of OPM on August 1 and had been serving as the agency's acting director since former director James B. King's departure in early September.

As OPM director, Lachance will oversee an agency with 3,700 employees and an operating budget of $376 million.

Lachance joined OPM in 1993 as head of the agency's communications office. From 1994 to 1996 she was director of communications and policy and from 1996 to earlier this year she was OPM's chief of staff.

Before working at OPM, Lachance was director of communications and political affairs for the American Federation of Government Employees. Prior to that, she held several positions in congressional offices.
