Clinton Wants IRS Compromise

White House Press Secretary Michael McCurry indicated Friday that the administration plans to use its upcoming proposal for a citizen's IRS review panel to work out a compromise with members of Congress who propose a private board to oversee the IRS.

The proposal, McCurry said, is likely to be detailed this week.

McCurry implied that news reports were correct in indicating the administration will call for a panel comprised of private citizens to work within the IRS to review complaints directed against the agency.

The congressional proposal--offered by Sen. Robert Kerrey, D-Neb., and Rep. Rob Portman, R-Ohio--would create an independent board of private citizens to review the IRS, a change the administration says could pose numerous conflicts of interest.
