Some Feds Get Tax Relief

Federal employees who work in facilities straddling state lines will get some state tax relief if legislation adopted by the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday is enacted, LEGI-SLATE News Service reported.

By voice vote, and with little discussion and no amendments, the panel passed a bill under which the incomes of certain federal employees at hydroelectric facilities on the Columbia and Missouri Rivers as well as federal and nonfederal employees at Fort Campbell would be immune from state nonresident taxation.

Currently, Washingtonians who are federal employees at Columbia River facilities have their incomes taxed by Oregon; Washington does not have a state income tax. A parallel situation is occurring at facilities on the Missouri River.
