Career Ambassadors Named

On Monday, President Clinton nominated four career diplomats to ambassadorships.

Clinton named:

  • Daniel Speckhard as ambassador to Belarus. Since 1993, Speckhard has been a deputy to the ambassador-at-large for the new independent states of the former Soviet Union.
  • Curtis Warren Kamman as ambassador to Colombia. Kamman is currently ambassador to Bolivia.
  • Maura Harty as ambassador to Paraguay. Harty, who entered the Foreign Service in 1981, has held consular assignments in Bogota, Colombia, and Madrid, Spain.
  • Anne Marie Sigmund as ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic. Sigmund is currently counselor to the United States Information Agency.

According to a report in the Associated Press, Clinton said he supports the expected nomination of Republican Massachusetts Gov. William Weld to be ambassador to Mexico. Although Weld has not formally been nominated, Clinton said "I'll do everything I can to get him confirmed."
