U.S. Navy International Logistics Symposium

Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton will be a guest speaker at a three-day International Logistics Symposium sponsored by the Navy International Programs Office in conjunction with the American Society of Naval Engineers, July 14-16, 1997, at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Crystal City, VA. Representatives from government, industry and foreign nations will meet to exchange ideas and review exhibits on a variety of logistics topics related to the Navy's Foreign Military Sales program. **TSP OPEN SEASON**The Thrift Savings Plan Open Season runs through July 31. During this time, you may begin contributing to the TSP, change the amount of your TSP contributions, or allocate TSP contributions to your account among the three investment funds. THE FEDERAL DIARY--Federal and postal workers with money in their tax-deferred thrift savings plan's C-fund (stock market index) enjoyed a 29.9 percent rate of return for the 12 months ending in May. Remember, open season for the Thrift Savings Plan runs until July 31...and...OPM Director King will give special awards today to agencies judged to have the best family-friendly workplace programs (The Washington Post).

WELFARE TO WORK--Rep. Charles Rangel discusses why he voted against welfare reform and says the move to get the federal government to hire 10,000 welfare recipients "won't put a dent in closing a welfare job gap of some two million jobs; only an active policy that promotes private-sector job creation, training and placement will make the difference" (The Washington Times).

RULING--"In a case closely watched by federal employees, the Supreme Court ruled that a public worker who has been charged with a crime need not receive a hearing before being suspended without pay" (The Washington Post).

VETERANS--The Veterans' Employment Opportunities Act, which passed the House of Representatives by a two-thirds vote in April, has finally collected a pair of Senate sponsors (Federal Human Resources Week, 6/9/97).

FEEA--The director of the Federal Employees Education and Assistance Fund thinks the organization he runs is an example of successful labor-management partnership in the federal sector (Federal Human Resources Week, 6/9/97)

WORK & FAMILY--Making time for prenatal care and maternity leave is causing problems for employees and managers (Wall Street Journal, Work & Family).
