U.S. Navy International Logistics Symposium

Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton will be a guest speaker at a three-day International Logistics Symposium sponsored by the Navy International Programs Office in conjunction with the American Society of Naval Engineers, July 14-16, 1997, at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Crystal City, VA. Representatives from government, industry and foreign nations will meet to exchange ideas and review exhibits on a variety of logistics topics related to the Navy's Foreign Military Sales program. **TSP OPEN SEASON**The Thrift Savings Plan Open Season runs through July 31. During this time, you may begin contributing to the TSP, change the amount of your TSP contributions, or allocate TSP contributions to your account among the three investment funds. THE FEDERAL DIARY--The House Government Reform and Oversight civil service subcommittee today will consider--and may approve--a plan that would increase retirement plan contributions by nonpostal workers who are under the old Civil Service Retirement System but would spare other federal workers (The Federal Diary, The Washington Post, 6/5/97)

NEW FEDERAL BUILDING--The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center will open its doors next month at the Federal Triangle on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, eventually creating a new home for 7,000 federal employees and new hope for the District's economic revival (The Washington Post).

HAMMER AWARD--Eight organizations responsible for designing and implementing the Metro Area Reemployment Project and the five Metro Area Reemployment Centers (MARC) in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area received Vice President Al Gore's Hammer award for its intergovernmental project (Newsfile, Workforce, 6/97).

WORK AND FAMILY--Despite many employer-provided, work-life programs, Americans are falling further behind in their effort to balance the pressures of work with the relentless demands of home, contends a noted sociologist (Employee Benefit News, 6/97).

FLEXITIME DEADLOCK--"Senate Republicans and Democrats deadlocked yesterday over legislation that could affect the schedules of millions of American workers" (The Washington Post).

TAKE A BREAK--A recent study by time management experts concludes that the average American has more free time than at any other point in the past three decades. And rather than slowing things down, more free time has increased the pace of life (The Washington Post).
