John Koskinen, deputy director for management at the Office of Management and Budget since 1994, today confirmed rumors that he is leaving the government July 9.

In his role at OMB, Koskinen has been the Clinton Administration's point man on several major initiatives, including implementation of the Government Performance and Results Act and the Clinger-Cohen Act, which reformed management of information technology. He headed or was a member of several interagency groups, including the President's Management Council, the Chief Financial Officers Council, and the National Partnership Council.

In 1996 Koskinen received a special Federal Technology Leadership Award from Government Executive. Last week he was honored by the National Capital Area Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration with the Elmer B. Staats Award for Accountability in Government.

Koskinen said he is taking a "sabbatical," and added there is some chance he will return to government.

"I've never taken more than two weeks off," Koskinen said. He and his wife plan to do some traveling. Koskinen, who chaired the Washington host committee for the 1994 World Cup soccer championship and headed the 1996 Washington Olympic Soccer Committee, said the sabbatical could give him the chance to attend the World Cup in France next year.

A replacement for Koskinen has not yet been named.
