Base Closure Plan Rejected

Defense Secretary William Cohen's plan to close more military bases got no sympathy from the House National Security Military Installations Subcommittee on Wednesday.

While approving the authorization of $9.1 billion for military construction projects around the country and the world, the subcommittee provided no money at all for any further base closings.

"We've spent so much money closing bases that until we can get our arms around it, it's too soon for another round," said Subcommittee Chairman Joel Hefley, R-Colo.
