U.S. Navy International Logistics Symposium

Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton will be a guest speaker at a three-day International Logistics Symposium sponsored by the Navy International Programs Office in conjunction with the American Society of Naval Engineers, July 14-16, 1997, at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Crystal City, VA. Representatives from government, industry and foreign nations will meet to exchange ideas and review exhibits on a variety of logistics topics related to the Navy's Foreign Military Sales program. **TSP OPEN SEASON**The Thrift Savings Plan Open Season began last week and ends July 31. During this time, you may begin contributing to the TSP, change the amount of your TSP contributions, or allocate TSP contributions to your account among the three investment funds. THE FEDERAL DIARY--"Some federal health plans may have to raise premiums or cut benefits (or both) to offset the cost of new levels of coverage they will be required to provide in 1998"(The Washington Post).

JUDICIAL--There are 100 vacancies in the federal court system and the slow pace of nominations and confirmations have some lawyers questioning whether justice is being served (USA TODAY).

OF INTEREST--You'll need a mix of skills to handle careers in health care (The Wall Street Journal, Managing Your Career)...Documents dealing with the Nation's budget are on the Internet (The Washington Post)...Corporations are having trouble filling summer jobs (The Wall Street Journal, Work Week)... Companies that lease workers are growing by such bounds that they will employ 37 million by 2007, up from 2.5 million in 1995 (USA Today, 5/20/97).

WELFARE TO WORK--President Clinton and the top executives of more than 100 companies, including some of the biggest in the country, meet at the White House today and "proclaim their commitment to give jobs to people on welfare"(The Wall Street Journal, 5/20/97).

BUYOUTS--Virginia Gov. George Allen's effort to save about $110 million a year by cutting 5,500 employees form the state payroll saved only $7 million this year, largely because agencies are spending more on private contractors to get work done, legislative analysts said (The Washington Post, 5/20/97).
