HHS to Offer Web Cures

People suffering medical ailments will be able to look up treatments on a Web site the Department of Health and Human Services will unveil in the fall of 1998, the Associated Press reported.

The department announced Wednesday that the National Guideline Clearinghouse will list recommended treatments for medical problems and set up discussion groups for patients with similar illnesses.

"Internet technology makes it possible to provide rapid access to the latest information on medical treatments," HHS Secretary Donna Shalala said.

HHS is working with the American Medical Association and the American Association of Health Plans to develop the site.

In April the department launched Healthfinder, an on-line catalog of health information. While Healthfinder is a general inventory of health information from federal agencies, the new effort will focus on treatments.
